As a physics teacher at Phillips Academy, Dr. Zorrilla has been instrumental in the founding, organization of club activities, and resource management. He has helped in every way from practicing funding proposals with us to driving us to launches.
As a mentor from the Nest Makerspace at Phillips Academy, we have received critiques, materials, and comprehensive engineering feedback from Ms. Chavarria. She has been of significant help to the team and we wouldn't be here without her.
A mentor that works within the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), Mr. Salem has provided us much assistance in understanding the competition rules, rocket retrieval, logistics, and providing us a safe launch site.
When we first started this club in the fall, we never imagined making it this far into the competition. After countless hours of hard work and dedication by all members of the club, we pushed past challenge after challenge and made it to where we are today.
We are grateful to all of the adults and organizations that supported us along the way. This includes Brickyard Collaborative Inc. for allowing us to associate with them and the Phillips Academy NEST Makerspace, in which we constructed our rockets and learned many of the skills used to design and construct them. The Makerspace Coordinator, Ms. Chavarria, has also taught us many of the aforementioned skills and connected us with The Brickyard. Our faculty mentor, Dr. Zorrilla, who stuck with us from the very start, has provided so much guidance on all things management. Our NAR mentor, Jim Salem, who situated us with the competition and provided a safe and reliable launch site. We are also very grateful to the Abbot Academy Fund, from which we received a grant of approximately $2500 to construct and run this club for the 2023-24 season. Our parents, friends, and family who were always ready to cheer us on. A special thanks to our rocket, “Scrambled”, for sticking with us the whole way!
We can’t wait to see where the competition takes us next year!
