Scrambled was our competition rocket for the 2023-2024 competition season, our very first as a team. It stood at a height of 71.5cm and a max diameter of 6.6cm. Scrambled's final launch mass was approximately 335g and utilized an Aerotech E20-4W engine in its propulsion system. Our first-ever rocket, Scrambled launched to an apogee of 800ft at the American Rocketry Challenge National Finals, a mere 20ft lower than the rocket's design goal. All rocket systems functioned excellently at the National Finals, and Scrambled was recovered with no damage.
Check out this clip from our third launch this year.
Started in 2002 by Trip Barber, the American Rocketry Challenge (ARC) was designed for high school students to show off their prowess in Rocketry through a half year of hard work, experimenting and testing to fit the goals of the competition for any given year. It is also the world's largest student rocket contest. For the 2024-2025 year the contest follows the goal of launching a rocket with two horizontal eggs to 790 ft (241 m) within 39-44 seconds using a single-stage separating rocket with a larger upper body.
The 2025 American Rocketry Challenge season is now upon us and we have a lot of ideas. One rocket system which we are working to implement is air-braking. This system will allow the rocket to know its live altitude, velocity, acceleration, and inertia and use software to calculate when to release the "air brakes". These are essentially pieces of PETG/Fiberglass that will be released from the sides of the rocket at a certain angle as to create drag and slow the rocket down. With enough testing and development, Boom Crew's rockets will be able to hit their altitude mark exactly.
